American Workhorses - combining rugged dependability and elegant styling

International Harvester was first in reliable, sturdy farm equipment and later in commercial trucks. The 1934 C-series was the first to feature automobile-like styling sporting a V-type aluminium grille and slanted windows. Powered by a six-cyclinder, 213 cubic inch engine with an output of 78 horsepower, C-1 International Harvester is a landmark in International-Harvester history.

The Coupe-Express earned Studebaker recognition as a builder of lightweight trucks. The 1938 Coupe-Express Model K had a six-cyclinder engine that produced 90 horsepower at 3400 rpm. The styling was based on the company's automobile design for the year, featuring the Planar transverse spring suspension system which had been introduced on Studebaker automobiles three years earlier. Today this truck is considered a very rare find.

In 1941 Chevrolet presented its Model AK 1/2-ton pickup which featured a new front end with a double-grille. The unique look of this double grille, the fender-mounted headlights and the swept-back parking lights gave the vehicle a unique look that has made the model AK a favourite among collectors.

After WW 2 Dodge adapted its 4x4 military truck for the civilian market. The Power Wagon WDX was a 1-ton vehicle with a 230 cubic inch-six cylinder engine. Capable of transporting such auxiliary equipment as optional winches and pulleys, the Dodge Power Wagon WDX was truly a workhorse that could handle the toughest jobs.

The 1939 REO Speed Delivery vehicle introduced hydraulic brakes and synchromesh between the second and third gears of the three-speed manual transmission. Both sides of the windscreen opened for superior ventilation, had armrests and ashtrays on the doors and had chrome on the front bumper.

The 1940 Ford Pickup had a restyled hood and a grille that echoed that of the '39 Ford Deluxe. The cad had a major makeover with a one-piece stamped-steel front panel combined with the cowl, firewall, windscreen frame and the top. Other changes included a cowl-mounted windscreen wiper, redesigned instrument cluster, two spoke steering wheel and more comfortable seats.
